Semi Drop Deck Trailers

  • A drop deck trailer (also called a step deck trailer) is a flatbed semi-trailer with two deck levels — a higher front section (the gooseneck) and a lower rear deck. The step down in deck height allows loads that would otherwise exceed the standard 4.3m height limit to be carried without an overdimensional permit. They are widely used in construction, mining, and general freight for machinery, equipment, and tall or awkward loads.

  • Midland drop deck trailers are built to an aggregate trailer mass (ATM) of up to 45 tonnes, with a payload capacity of up to 32 tonnes. Exact ATM depends on axle configuration — Tandem, Tri, or Quad Axle options are available. Your specific build is confirmed at order stage based on your payload requirements and road network.

  • Drop deck trailers carry loads that are too tall for a standard flatbed. Common freight includes construction machinery, agricultural equipment, industrial plant, and prefabricated structures. The lower deck provides clearance to move freight under bridges and overhead obstacles without an overdimensional permit in most cases.

  • Under NHVR road access rules, loads must not exceed 4.3m in height without an overdimensional permit. A drop deck trailer’s lowered rear deck typically sits 400-500mm lower than a standard flatbed, allowing taller loads to stay within the 4.3m limit. For loads exceeding 4.3m, a Class 2 Heavy Vehicle permit from the NHVR is required before travel on public roads. Source: NHVR Heavy Vehicle Access — nhvr.gov.au/road-access

  • A flat top trailer has a single-level deck at a fixed height. A drop deck has a stepped profile — higher at the gooseneck, lower at the rear. This step gives the drop deck significantly more usable height for tall loads. Flat tops suit standard-height freight; drop decks are chosen when payload height would otherwise exceed the 4.3m road limit.

  • No, Drop Deck Trailers and Step Deck Trailers are the same trailer type. Sometimes, people refer to them as Drop Deck and other times they’re referred to as Step Deck. But, there are no differences between the two trailers.

  • No, drop deck trailers and semi drop deck trailers are the same trailer type. The terms are used interchangeably in the Australian transport industry — there are no structural differences between the two. Midland builds both to the same specification.
