Buying a truck trailer: the questions operators actually ask
Short, straight answers before you commit to a build. If your question isn't here, call us on 1300 301 570.
How much does a Midland trailer cost?
Price depends on the trailer type, the spec, and the job it's built for — a standard tag trailer and a custom low loader aren't in the same bracket. We quote per build rather than list a sticker price, because the right trailer for your work is rarely the cheapest quote on the table. The most expensive trailer is the one that stops work, so we'd rather get the spec right than win on price alone. Send us the job and we'll put a real number in front of you.
Are Midland trailers durable? What are they built from?
Midland trailers are built from 100% Australian steel — 350 Grade mild steel for the structure, and 750 Q&T Bisalloy or Hardox where the trailer takes the hardest wear. Every trailer goes through a three-stage finish: sandblasting to Sa 2.5, a poly-zinc prime, then powder coat. That's what protects the steel and keeps the trailer working year after year.
What load capacity can Midland build to?
Capacity is engineered to the job, not capped by a catalogue. Our in-house engineering team designs each trailer around the load you're carrying and the combination you're running, using high-tensile Bisalloy and Hardox where the numbers demand it. If you need a Performance-Based Standards (PBS) combination to legally carry more per trip, we design for that too. Tell us the load and the route — we'll engineer the capacity around it.
What's the lead time on a new trailer?
Lead time depends on the build and where it sits in the production schedule across our two factories. If you need a proven trailer sooner, our Tow and Go range is finished in our factory and ready to work, which is usually the faster path. For a fully engineered custom build, lead time is part of the quote. Call 1300 301 570 for current timeframes.
How good is the build quality?
Midland has built more than 2,100 trailers for over 1,300 customers since 2006, from two Australian factories with in-house engineering and 100+ staff. Builds are cut on an 11m x 3m high-definition plasma cutter, formed on a 300-tonne brake press, and designed with in-house 3D CAD and simulation before any steel is cut. Australian steel, in-house engineering, and a controlled finish process — that's the build.
Will a Midland trailer handle Australian work?
Midland trailers are designed and built in Australia, for Australian operators — construction, mining, heavy haulage, agriculture, waste, plant and machinery, precast concrete, cranes and infrastructure. Because we engineer in-house, the trailer is matched to your load, your route and your regulations rather than to a generic spec sheet. If the job needs a PBS combination, we design and help you through approval.
